Abstract

There are significant spatial variations in inflows and outflows of unemployment in the Netherlands. In the present paper an attempt is made at providing an explanatory framework for differences in (male) unemployment inflow rates for Dutch provinces. This partial analysis of spatial differences in unemployment uses a multiple regression analysis to identify the relative importance of various explanatory factors affecting the unemployment inflow. The results are compared with a similar study for Great Brittan, and it follows that for both countries demand-side factors appear to be major explanatory variables. For the Netherlands, the number of agancies relative to the regional labor force shows up as an important indicator of demand effect on unemployment inflow.
