Applied Geography as Action Research: the St. Lucia Energy Futures Project
Abstract
A reappraisal of applied geography from the perspective of its pedagogic base (the transfer of knowledge from researcher to practitioner) is necessary, particularly in relation to current philosophical and ideological debates in geography. Action research is presented as the basis of an intervention strategy for use by applied geographers that take account of this requirement. Action research has social-psychological origins, but its application has been extended from an interpersonal focus to use within multi-organizational systems set in complex and changing environments. The St. Lucia Energy Futures Project provides an example of this style of action research carried out by geographers. There is a need for further demonstration and evaluation of this approach within geography.
